From 1994 to Today

About burnedbyLax

burnedbyLax began as a small hobby and evolved into a mission. Founder Michael J. Burns started stringing sticks in 1994 to fix pocket issues for himself. Growing up in his family’s butcher shop on Kent Island, Maryland, he learned resourcefulness early — even using butcher twine for his first string jobs. Those early lessons shaped a lifelong respect for craftsmanship and community.

After more than a decade coaching NCAA lacrosse under the esteemed Stewart Moan at Susquehanna University, Michael took a year off to reevaluate his connection to the game. That time away reignited his purpose — and in 2016, he returned to stringing. He noticed how rising prices and mass-produced gear were holding players back.

burnedbyLax became his way to give back: making The Creator’s Game accessible to every player, parent, and program — regardless of income, location, or experience.

Operating with the heart of a non-profit, burnedbyLax focuses on affordability, education, and community growth. By combining custom stringing, equipment solutions, coaching, consulting, diagnostics, and player resources, the brand acts as a lacrosse concierge — offering the expertise, tools, and personal service to help every player reach their fullest potential.

The Story

Michael’s lacrosse journey began on Kent Island, Maryland, playing for the Comets and Queen Anne’s High School before continuing at Whittier College in California. His coaching path came full circle — from grassroots programs to the NCAA — where he spent over a decade mentoring student-athletes under his coaching mentor, the esteemed Coach Stewart Moan at Susquehanna University; winning two Landmark Conference Championships and earning two NCAA Division III Lacrosse Tournament Appearances.

That full-circle moment was realized when his team faced Salisbury in the NCAA Tournament — the very same program Whittier battled a decade earlier.

For Michael, lacrosse has never just been a game — it’s been a grounding, creative outlet, and a bridge for connection. It became both therapy and ministry.

His family’s lacrosse roots run deep. Growing up on Kent Island and tending to his Aunt Trudy’s estate at Great Neck, Michael was surrounded by the legacy of R.V. Truitt — Aunt Trudy’s father — the first head lacrosse coach at his alma mater, the University of Maryland (1919–1927) and a 1959 National Lacrosse Hall of Fame inductee.

That legacy still resonates through every player R.V. influenced and lives on today through burnedbyLax — Michael and Lauri’s shared mission — and their children, Addi and Ti, who carry forward the same love for The Creator’s Game.

Founded by Michael J. Burns, a native of Kent Island, MD of the Eastern Shore of Maryland.  burnedbyLax was born out of a passion for lacrosse and a dedication to the community. Michael’s vision is to build a supportive environment where players, programs, and communities can grow, learn, and excel in the game — fulfilling the Creator’s purpose and calling in their lives.

From Kent Island Lacrosse to Whittier College and a decade coaching under Stewart Moan at Susquehanna University, Michael J. Burns brings a lifetime of leadership, precision, and mentorship to the game. As founder of burnedbyLax, he’s redefining player development through his unique Lacrosse Concerigeship — a personalized, quartermaster-style approach to stringing, equipment, coaching, and consulting designed to help every player reach their fullest potential in The Creator’s Game.
